Summary
Assuming that nature endowed humans with an aspiration towards religion (which is far from certain), this aspiration could have developed even without the existence of God. For example, certain human characteristics that tend towards religion - innate or acquired, it doesn't matter - could have spread because they allow for greater social cohesion.
